What to Do in an Emergency
A clear plan for big problems, like someone being badly hurt.

My name is {{childName}}. This is my story about emergencies. An emergency is a big problem — like someone being badly hurt, or a fire. Emergencies do not happen often. Most days have no emergencies at all. It still helps to have a plan, so I know what to do.

In an emergency, my first job is to find a grown-up as fast as I can. Then I say what happened in a loud, clear voice. In an emergency, a loud voice is the right voice. Grown-ups know what to do next.

If there is no grown-up nearby, I can call 000 on a phone. I say what happened and where I am. The people who answer 000 are helpers — talking to them is exactly the right thing to do in an emergency.

When I follow my plan, helpers come as quickly as they can. Helpers are trained — they know what to do. I can practise my emergency plan with a grown-up so it feels easy to remember. Having a plan makes me ready, just in case.
