Calming Down
What to do when everything feels too much.

My name is {{childName}}, and this is my story about calming down. Sometimes there is too much noise, too much light, or too much busyness around me. When that happens, I can feel overwhelmed. Feeling overwhelmed is a sign that my body needs a break.

My body gives me signals. My heart might beat fast. My hands might want to cover my ears. I might want to leave the room. These signals are useful — they tell me it is time to slow down.

I have calm-down tools I can use. I can find a quiet space. I can take slow breaths, use my headphones, count slowly, or have a sip of water. I can pick the tool that helps me most. Different tools help on different days, and that is okay.

I can also ask a grown-up for a break. Asking for a break is a smart and brave thing to do. When my body feels calm again, I can come back and join in. Knowing how to calm my body is one of my strengths.
