  • Sound - loud noises, screams, bells ringing etc
  • Touch - The feel of certain fabrics, clothes label, hot and cold etc
  • Taste - certain foods, candy is a no no for many kids with autism
  • Smell - Some smells can trigger anxiety, smoke etc

Having sensory difficulties is a common thing, but as typically developing beings we deal with these issues in a very different manner. We reason and understand what our sensory processing issues are and we naturally cope with the sensory input. For example if someone speaks to us, our brains receive this information and recognise it as a voice and we respond automatically in an appropriate manner.

Sensory processing difficulties occur when the individuals brain doesn't respond in the typical manner to the sensory input coming in.

So for example, some autistic children can be over sensitive to sensation, the feel of fabrics and touch.

For these children it is generally a good idea to remove labels and choose clothing without raised seams etc.

Some children with autism spectrum disorder on the other hand have an almost insatiable desire for sensory stimulation and may need constant stimulation, they may for example use stmming, repetitive stereotypical movements such as rocking, head banging, finger flicking and on.

Many Sensory input difficulties CAN be overcome by using strategies and autism supports
