Having autism affects the development of social awareness, communication and imagination skills. This is often called the Triad of Autistic Imapirments or Social Skills Deficits, these deficits are a common characteristic of autism and WILL ALWAYS be present in varying degrees.

"Social stories for autism provide the student with ASD with an insight into the thoughts, feelings and emotions of others. They ARE also a means of addressing communication difficulties and social awareness skills in all children with autism. As well as helping with changes to routines, transitions, and interpreting cues and signals from others, all of which are marked areas of difficulty in most special needs students with autism. And can often lead onto frustration, anxiety and behavior that could be interpreted as disruptive" |
Unlike their typically developing peers the ASD with autism DOES NOT process information in the normal manner,
and may lack the ability to concentrate for any length of time unless it is on something they are interested in.
Commonly students on the autism spectrum ARE visual thinkers and learners which means that they think in pictures and WILL find VISUAL information and teaching far easier to understand, which CAN help most students on the autism spectrum to stay on task.
Autism social skills stories improve communication difficulties.
Autism social skills stories HELP special needs students with autism better understand the "wh" questions who, what, where, when and why as well as "HOW" all helping the STUDENT feel more comfortable in school.
Teachers of autistic students using social stories ALSO report far less occurrences of "melt downs" and increases in positive behaviors from the ASD student.
Autism social skills stories follow a specific formula and are generally visually rich.
