Visual strategies and supports are essentail when teaching "special needs students with autism"

WHY?

Because children with autism tend to be visual thinkers and learners, this means they think and learn in pictures, not by written or oral instruction, making learning easier to achieve with visual strategies. Therefore visual tools such as social stories ARE used with good effect. Social stories are also used to address communication difficulties, and teach social, imagination and interaction skills and behaviours.

Social stories for autism provide the ASD student with an insight into the thoughts, feelings and emotions of others. As well as a means of addressing communication difficulties, trying to figure out what is happening or not happening, handling changes and transitions, and interpreting cues and signals in the environment, all of which are marked areas of difficulty in autism. And can often lead onto frustration, anxiety and behavior that could be interpreted as disruptive.

The ASD student

Unlike their typically developing peers the ASD student does not process information in the normal manner, and may lack the ability to concentrate for any length of time unless it is on something they are interested in. Generally students with ASD and related communication difficulties are visual learners
